La bella Perugia: the city of the infinite view and home of the world famous Umbria Jazz Festival. For many, Umbria Jazz is more than a festival--it's a ritual, a yearly reunion with favorite musicians in the glorious hills of Umbria. There are few other places where you can hear legendary jazz figures jam with friends in a relaxed party atmosphere.

Along with the always impressive line up of jazz musicians, the festival welcomes all musical genres—rock and roll, world music, Cuban salseros and African tribal chanters, to name just a few. World travelers flock to Perugia to enjoy sophisticated rhythms and ultra-cosmopolitan good times.

Day 1 & 2 Monday / Tuesday -- USA / Rome / Perugia

Arrive Rome after an overnight flight from NYC. You will be met and transferred to Perugia, a beautiful hill town and the capital of Umbria. After some rest, enjoy a welcome reception, featuring local wines and cheeses and a light dinner. Later on we will head into the festival as a group for our first night of world class music.

Meals: Dinner

Day 3 -Wednesday - Perugia

Today a walking tour of Perugia including a visit to the massive 16th c. Papal fortress, a walk down the main Corso lined with elegant shops, to see the medieval guildhalls – which houses one magnificent fresco by Perugino himself.

Jazz lunch at one of Perugia’s finest restaurants. Dinner is on your own this evening, don’t worry, we have plenty of recommendations. Later make your way into the night for this evenings main musical event.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 4 -Thursday -Day trip to Assisi and Spello

This morning we visit Assisi the “crown jewel of the medieval hill towns.” We’ll get a taste of Assisi’s present day life and learn how its historical past has influenced life today in Assisi.

We’ll visit the stunning 3-level Basilica di San Francesco built in the 13th century as a resting place for St. Francis of Assisi. Our walk through town will include stops to meet and talk with local artisans’ painters, sculptors and young craftsman of maiolica.

Then we’ll head to Spello -che bello! -(16 km from Assisi), a gem of the “undiscovered” medieval hilltowns of Umbria. Lunch is in a medieval wine
cellar consisting of a tasting of Umbria's best wines, prize-winning olive oils and
various Umbrian delicacies which range from white truffle/almond paté to wild boar salami. Your host is none other than one of Umbria's top sommeliers.

Then it’s back to Perugia for more world class jazz.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 5 - Friday - Day trip to Gubbio

Dramatically perched on a hill overlooking the ruins of its Roman Theater, Gubbio is a hilltown where time stands still. Our walk through the labyrinthine medieval backstreets will take you to the imposing 14th c. Palazzo dei Consoli, said to rival Palazzo Vecchio in Florence in its beauty (we think it surpasses it).

No trip to Gubbio would be complete without a ride up the funicular to the top of Mt. Ingino and the monastery where St. Ubaldo, patron saint of Gubbio, is buried

Tonight—more music under the stars.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 6 -Saturday -- Day of Options

Today you can choose between taking a cooking class with an accomplished chef, an escorted walk in the countryside or a day on your own to enjoy the full festival experience.

Cooking Class – As the menus always focus on the freshest seasonal ingredients as well as Umbrian specialties, you start the day off with a market tour – sampling the local fare and meeting their creators.

You’ll return to the chef’s beautifully refurbished home for a 3 hour class incorporating specialties such as truffles, Pecorino cheese, and Torta al Testo. Traditional pasta dishes, specialty desserts and the finest local wines. Once the class is complete, sit down as a group to enjoy the fabulous meal you’ve just created.

Countryside Walk – for the more adventurous. You’ll take a long walk outside of the ‘walls’ of Perugia, through olive groves, sunflower fields, then feasting on a country lunch.

Meals: Breakfast, optional lunch

Day 7 - Sunday -- Lunch in the countryside
